When taken consistently, liquid collagen can significantly contribute to reversing or delaying skin ageing. Evidence from several controlled, randomised trials suggests that taking collagen improves skin moisture, elasticity and hydration. Which means that fine lines, wrinkles and rough skin are all improved with no known side effects.

Ageing and the loss of collagen & elastin

Ageing has noticeable detrimental effects on the connective tissue in the dermal layer of the skin. As we age, the production of both collagen and elastin fibres declines, resulting in wrinkles and fine lines, especially on the face. Some of this is genetic and some of this is due to extrinsic factors. Factors like too much UV sun exposure, smoking, poor nutrition, air pollution and chemicals can all speed up the loss of collagen and cause skin ageing.

This decrease in collagen production means the thickness of the dermal layer is reduced, as it’s the collagen that forms the scaffolding and padding that supports the skin from underneath. As well as collagen levels falling, the body also produces less hyaluronic acid and cartilage. This can result in weaker and drier skin tissue as the hyaluronic acid is what retains water and keeps the skin plumped up and fresh looking.

Does liquid collagen work for wrinkles?

For a liquid collagen supplement to help the skin maintain its moisture and reverse the signs of ageing, it needs to contain the right amino acids, such as proline, glycine and hydroxyproline. As collagen is a very large molecule, any collagen in a supplement must be already broken down (hydrolysed) into much smaller peptides so that the body can absorb it through the gut wall.

Best liquid collagen for wrinkles

Marine fish collagen is particularly similar to human collagen and has a good safety profile, high bioactivity and is easily absorbed if it’s hydrolysed. Once inside the body, data suggests that these particular amino acids from a collagen supplement can help maintain the amount of collagen in the skin, as well as actively encouraging the body’s own production of collagen and hyaluronic acid. This in turn raises the amount of moisture in the stratum corneum (that’s the outermost layer of the skin to you and me).

Remember the collagen fibres we were talking about earlier? We now know that liquid collagen can increase both the density and the diameter of collagen fibrils. Overall, the skin benefits from the collagen being able to repair wrinkled or damaged skin and also from the antioxidant action of the collagen. This helps protect the skin from sun damage (but not enough for you to ditch the SPF…)

Obviously the amount of collagen, or amino acid hydrosylates in a supplement matters as well. Research using 5 grams of marine collagen peptides over several months has indicated in several studies that skin wrinkling, elasticity, moisture and roughness all show substantial improvements.

hydrolysed liquid marine collagen like ours is one of the most effective ways to decrease and even reverse fine lines and wrinkles.
