What are electrolytes?
Electrolytes are a group of minerals that carry an electrical charge when they dissolve in water. Because of this charge they are instrumental in dictating how much water is present in the body, regulating the pH levels in the blood and controlling the movement of water, nutrients and waste into and out of the body's cells.
How do electrolytes work?
Sodium and glucose enter the cell, balanced by potassium moving out. Water follows sodium to help maintain electrical balance.
The sodium-potassium pump moves sodium out and potassium in, with water following sodium. Magnesium helps convert nutrients into energy.
Calcium helps control muscles, sends signals through nerves, and keeps the heart rhythm steady.
