Best vitamins for a hangover: A nutritionist's guide

A banging headache, waves of nausea and the room spinning around you. We’ve all been there the day after a heavy night of drinking, with 168,000 people searching for “hangover cure” every year in the UK alone. It probably won't come as a surprise to learn that London came out as the most hungover UK city, with 40,000 searches of "hangover cure" each year.

And now with more people becoming health-conscious, another alcoholic drink, otherwise known as 'hair of the dog', might not be the first thing you reach for when you're hungover. Instead of drinking yourself into hangover number two, replenishing your vitamin levels and resting your body could be the new way forward.

Read on to find out which vitamins are best for a hangover and other tips to ensure your hangover isn't so bad next time.

What are the best vitamins for a hangover?

Not only does alcohol dehydrate you, but it also depletes the essential vitamins in your body, contributing to the unpleasant hangover symptoms we all know too well, like fatigue, nausea and a relentless headache. So it makes sense vitamins would be good for a hangover as we need to top up what's been lost!

Vitamin C: The ultimate hangover cure?

By far the best vitamin for a hangover is none other than vitamin C! As well as loading up on lots of fresh fruit and veg the next day, a sachet or two of high-strength, delicious vitamin C supplements, like Vitamin C Zooki, will replenish the nutrients lost, give you the surge of energy you need and ensure your immune system is working properly. Radio 1's Nick Grimshaw can vouch for that. In two mouth-wateringly good flavours (Watermelon and Citrus Orange) and on the go sachets, you'll be all set wherever you are.

Glutathione for hangovers

To get the toxins out of your body, Glutathione Zooki should be next on your hangover vitamins list for speeding up your natural detoxification process. It'll also support your energy levels, nervous system (to beat the horrible pangs of anxiety that often come with being hungover!) and skin alongside side kick Vitamin C Zooki!

Probiotics for hangovers

Often when you're hungover your gut can feel pretty icky! All that alcohol, cigarettes and potentially questionable late night food can whack things out of balance. Restore your gut with good bacteria with our nifty 35 billion probiotic dispensers, Gut Biome Zooki. In Blueberry Lemon flavour, it's delicious straight off a spoon or mixed with your breakfast.

Other tips for curing a hangover

Other ways you can lessen and possibly speed up your hangover recovery are:

Eat a balanced meal before you go out

Include fat, protein, and carbohydrates as food in the stomach slows down the absorption of alcohol.

Hydrate

Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it causes higher levels of urination leading to dehydration. Drink plenty of water, before, during and the day after drinking to keep yourself well hydrated. Aim to drink a glass of water between drinks and have at least one big glass of water before going to sleep. Why not try a vitamin C-rich smoothie to tackle all your symptoms at once? - recipe here.

Have a hearty breakfast the following day

Alcohol can inhibit glucose production causing low levels of blood sugar, so make sure you have a good hearty breakfast the next day, or a snack before bed, to maintain your blood sugar levels.
